The surf in Panama is year-round, with the most consistent conditions occurring on the Pacific coast between March and November. But what makes a trip to Panama an especially fine wintertime option is the prevailing wind: blowing out of the north during the dry season between December and April, this means clean offshores on the Pacific side in Santa Catalina.
.
Our Panamanian surf connection takes you to the renowned Casablanca Surf Resort, located right on one of Central America's premier surf breaks: the fabulous reefbreak of Santa Catalina. Perhaps the most consistent big-wave spots on any coast, Catalina is a long, hollow, powerful right that peaks up and then grinds along a lava-rock reef.
Depending on the tide (Panama experiences some of the most extreme tidal changes on earth: up to 16 feet on the Pacific Coast!) Santa Catalina rarely drops under four feet and has been ridden up to 25. But a more organized, easy-to-lineup big wave break you're not likely to find.
The Casablanca Surf Resort was founded by Panamanian surf pioneer (and Santa Catalina's discoverer) Ricardo Icaza-the white house, or casa blanca, overlooking the break, was his original hideaway. Today the resort is appointed in equally stylish detail: cool cabanas with shared bathroom facilities, a colonial style, two-bedroom house, complete with kitchen, porch and palapa, and the casa blanca itself, the original two-story, four-bedroom house on the point, complete with living room and spectacular terrace views of the surf. Meals are taken at one of two central dining areas, offering a varied menu of local cuisine, American dishes and seafood so fresh you probably surfed over it that morning. Casablanca Surf Resort in Panama is the perfect destination for the surfer who wants to combine culture, comfort and consistent surf.
In addition, customized, multi-day trips can be arranged to a number of remote offshore islands, where you'll experience pristine Central American surfing at its best: empty peaks, tubes and point breaks that have rarely seen a wake.
These trips are only organized during the dry season January - April. This, plus excellent fishing, eco-tours and Canal excursions, makes a Panamanian surfari a can't-miss adventure.
